I collect mostly Roman Empire coins, so I am by far no expert on this type of coinage. However, my first impression of this coin is that it's a modern fake. Perhaps someone with some knowledge of earlier coins will chime in, but to me the configuration seems wrong, the roundness seems wrong, the fabric seems wrong, etc. I will be very surprised if this turns out to be authentic. Sorry, I know this isn't what you want to hear, but that is my opinion. Are you sure of the weight? That's awfully heavy for 30mm coins. Where did you get this coin and do you know anything about the seller?

That it's a replica was my first impression as well because nothing about it looks right as far as being authentic. I just started collecting ancient Roman Imperial coins two months ago, so I didn't really want to say anything at first. But after looking at thousands of coins, I have a better idea about what's authentic and what's not.
Even though I am not familiar with the design or any knowledge of that particular coin, I still had that impression. And yes, I say welcome to you as well.

, to the community, Sadly, I agree with the others. While early Roman Sextans where round none that I know of where ever made in this style.

Thanks gang and glad to be here.
JW: that is 3 inches on the size...but still quite heavy.
O wouldn't be surprised to learn of it being a fake or copy of some sort, I was just hoping to know if it is a copy of a real coin. It was with a large collection of just plain odds and ends coins that a gentleman put away over 40 years of collecting. Much of it is not of significant value but many interesting items none the less.
There are a great many other ancients to go over so maybe there is someone you folks might suggest for an in person visit...? I will be attending the FUN show in Orlando to watch a coin sell at auction by Heritage. Any ancient dealers (coins not their age!) anyone would recommend?
Thanks again!

I'm sorry. I'm so used to looking at MM, I didn't recognize inches. Maybe it's time I took a break from these coins. NOT!
I live in Florida and I have yet to find an Ancients dealer anywhere near me in Tampa. Most coin shops look at me like I'm crazy when I ask them if they have any Ancients. There was a coin show in Orlando about two months ago, but I couldn't find out if any one would be there selling Ancients, so I didn't go.
Again, we all would like to welcome you here and hope you continue to participate.

This doesn't look like any Roman coin I've seen...
I don't even think it's a replica/fake. My guess is that it's a privately made design. But I know nothing about it, so again, it's just a guess.

Thanks JW and everyone.
I will try to post some more of the pieces I have. I think some of them may be worth looking at and I am happy to be getting a chance with ancients for awhile...
