I picked this coin up the other day from a seller in Great Britain. I wanted to show you guys and get your opinions on it. I love how the lettering and figures jump out at you from the lighter dirt.

Nice coin. Something about Gallienus coins can be very attractive.
Do you know where this one was minted?

Quote: Something about Gallienus coins can be very attractive I like Gallienus coins as well and I have several. I don't know what the attraction is, but generally Gallienus coins are so ugly they are, well let's say, pretty. Nice coin and nice contrasts.

I have attributed this as follows: Gallienus. 253-268 AD. Æ Antoninianus . Struck during sole reign, 260-268 AD. Antioch mint. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right / VIRTVS AVG, Hercules standing slightly right, head left, resting on club and holding globe and lion's skin; VIIC•. RIC V pt. 1, 623; RSC 1250. At one point this would have had silvering like the WildWinds example http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/bigp...ienus/i.html

Nice coin, I like gallienus coins, and have started to build a small collection of them. This coin has a nice desert patina and is well rounded unlike a few of mine, it has a nicely centered strike also. Good find.

I think the appeal of Gallienus is the fact that his reign spanned the largest variation in the evelopment (or decline) of the antoninianus. In the early days of the joint reign, coins were silver enough to at least look silver; by the end of the sole reign they were copper relying on silver wash. He struck from several mints that were very different in terms of style and morkmanship. Late products of Antioch, while mostly copper, are round and well made but the artwork is becoming formal and not particularly 'artistic'. On the down side, many of the coins with best portrait art have ragged flans. Part legends are common from some mints but not others. More than many reigns, many reverse dies of Gallienus were used long beyond there proper service life making coins with one good side and one bad common. Gallienus has some exceeding interesting types like the zoo series but he is so common that you can get 100 different types without paying high price. In addition to the official mints, Gallienus is well represented in the Barbarous Radiates which are really wild. In addition to the Imperial mints, Gallienus still has some Provincials including some that are about as far out as some of the Barbarous coins. Add to this he had a wife and kids with coins not to mention the issues of his father during the joint reign which really should be collected as a group. Soon, the revised RIC covering him will be released. It is an appealing specialty.
