Here's an 1829 Matron Head Large Cent I picked out of a "cull" pile although I had to fiscally fight someone at the end to get it. IMHO it can be none other than the "Medium Letters" variety (note the closed "A's") .... There appears to be some corrosion, but not a really significant amount. I'd love to have a Net Grade idea on this one before I get it in hand. PG

It's a nice find IMO and I have a vacancy in my 7070 for that type. VF-30?

VF-20 IMHO. Nice coin! Would you mind sharing your purchase price?

Yeah, it probably makes VF-20 and it does appear to have some light corrosion. Might be an excellent candidate for some Verdi-Care treatment!
Very nice pickup at (presumably) a near-cull average price for the lot. It does appear to be the N-3 (medium letters) variety, although the photo of this variety in the Rasmussen catalog shows a strong die crack through the first four stars. This crack does not show up in the image of your new coin. Maybe that means it's an earlier die state.
The catalog entry mentions this variety is usually found with a blunt strike, so specimens appear to be in lower grade than warranted based on the actual level of wear.

I'd agree and say VF20 Details as well. Light corrosion being the reason for a Details grade.

For TJ... I got it along with a holed Braided Hair and average 3CN for $83. A bit above cull price, but around a quarter of retail for the '29. @jaobler... I have my bottle of BadThad Juice at the ready! By the way - HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!

Pretending there's no surface corrosion, I think it would grade higher than VF 30. The obverse strike on that coin was not strong to begin with.
That coin is just about uncirculated -- with the surface condition determining grade.
If it is, indeed medium letters, that's a heck of a pick, paleo.
Are you going to get it graded? I would.

Coin in hand and, as best I can tell, it's a Newcomb-5 (which does not have the die crack between stars 1-4). There is some corrosion, but the reverse is really up there in grade. I'm thinking TPG bound. Any suggestions on which one to use?

The new pictures give me a better perspective. I think a tgp would give it VF, tops. Considering the varying range of valuation by different price lists, the low end value of VF may mean it's not worth having it TPG'd; however, if you're not collecting a set of them, slabbed, one way or another, is a good road, imho.
