Hey everyone, My dad bought 3 of the State Quarter maps back when they first came out (They appear to have been made by The Morgan Mint). He only got about to 2002/2003 and forgot about them after he moved. Recently I finished filling the slots, but the older coins seem to be toned/discolored now. They are almost gold/yellow when the light hits them at certain angles. (Will this happen with all paper albums?) So....--> Should I the discolored quarters out and replace them with newer quarters? I don't mind the task of replacing them, simply gives me another reason to search some quarter rolls! --> Leave them alone? The reason I ask is I plan on giving each of my sisters their map that my dad began for them. Thanks for any input CCF! I have learned a lot lately from everyone here! I can try to post pictures if needed, although I do not know how well the toning/discoloration would show up in pictures. Happy Holidays, Corey Edited by cjmcguire 12/21/2011 05:32 am

It's not always the album. I had some sitting in a draw that turned a real nice golden color. Sometimes the tone will add value to a coin if it's a real nice looking tone, eye appeal is a ++ to a coin. I think that once in a while eye appeal is more important the a grade number. John1

John1,
Thanks for your answer! I guess I will leave them in there for now. I don't honestly think my sisters would know the difference to be honest. However, it is very obvious to me that these coins have turned a golden yellow. I will post a picture shortly here, I have not figured out how to take pictures that show the color/details well.
Thanks again John1.
By the way, would you recommend putting random coins (pennies) in a blue "Whitman" paper album I already have or in "2x2s"? I have several older coins in relatively nice condition and don't want them to be damaged due to improper storage. (learned that from you guys!)

I would put your better coins in 2x2's. Those blue folders I don't trust. Albums are better then folders,Dansco is a good brand. John1

John1,
Man you are on the ball! Thank you very much for the fast answers. I have been going through the old wheat cents my dad saved from circulation. Just found a 1917, 3 x 1936, and 14 x 1955's that I need to look through.
Thanks for the advice, had I not asked I was going to put them in the Whitman folder, even though I had a feeling the 2x2's were better. Is it odd that I tape my 2x2's instead of stapling them? I don't know why I started doing that, if I need to staple them instead I will.

Aye the color was probably due to a bit of moisture reacting with the metal and the adhesive of the album. Sounds spiffy though. :-)

Toning on these would generally make them more appealing IMO. There's plenty of blast white examples out there already.
You need to store the folder properly. Put it into a giant ziplock bag with a desiccant pack and a red cent (to absorb hydrogen sulfide). The store the whole thing in a tupperware type container. This should slow down the toning process significantly.

With the start of the State Quarters many manufacturers of almost anything jumped on the band wagon, so to speak, and started to produce FOLDERS for them. NO not ALBUMS, FOLDERS. Those maps for the State Quarters are all over the place and made of almost anything. The manufacturers of those do not care about the end results of the coins and most of them will not make anything else coin related. The cardboard and paper they are made with could be almost anything and your coins will end up suffering from them. And too you push the coins into place with fingers. They are exposed to everything, every time you open them including your breath, spit, the air, etc. As mentioned on this forum many times a Folder is not the same as an Album. If you plan on keeping your coins in the best possible condition for at least now, spend the money on an Album.

Thanks for all the replies! I tried to take pictures to show the toning of the older quarters vs. the ones I recently put in these maps. I could not get the lighting right, I need to get an adjustable lamp still which should help hopefully.
Thanks CCF!
