After visiting Australia this summer, I absolutely fell in love with everything down there. Can anyone offer advice on how to get coins in circulated condition other than ebay? I love bankroll searching, but I have a feeling that ordering boxes of coins and shipping it over here would by nearly impossible. Thoughts? And yes going back would be a preferred option...

Through another forum I recently concluded a worthwhile trade with a collector in Australia. The only cost was in the postage and that was minimal compared to the value/number of the coins we exchanged. I have now traded with collectors on 3 continents. Before we can trade with members of this forum, however, we both have a ways to go in the number of posts we submit. But, in my mind trading opens up the world and can make new friends. Keep on posting!

Hi, Plenty of Australian forum members (myself included) would be happy to swap or sell coins with you. Postage cost is a real sticking point though. For example, 25 x 50¢ coins is a 500g (1lb 1.6oz) package and Australia Post charges $17.25 for air mail or $23.00 for registered. Sea mail is more economical at $12.30 but incredibly slow -3 to 4 months! These figures apply to USA, Canada and Middle East zones. http://auspost.com.au/products-and-...culator.htmlFor express services (higher cost again) or more than 500g weight there is an additional $9.00 security inspection surcharge added to postage charge. (I assume this is to do with cost of complying with Inland Security procedures.) So, the value of the coins needs to be reasonably high to justify the postage. Jeff

Hi, Jeff - Just received a package from Melbourne today and, yes, the cost from Australia to Canada was AU$17.25. From Canada to Australia and also to Europe packages of a similar number of coins have cost me only CA$9.25 by airmail. Delivery time 7-10 days. From the UK to Canada about UKp4.- Same delivery time. Not sure why your postal service is so much more expensive.

TAXES mate, pure and simple..they were just talking on the radio about the extreamly high import tax we pay and how it's a joke. You want to see a big joke, if you can, try and find out how much a brand new holden monaro is here and see how much one is there after import and a few years before they done the same with one of the fords. It's nearly cheaper to get one from there and ship it back It costs up heaps to get stuff in and send it out and that's why a lot of aussie stuff is just so expensive. Sorry I can't be of more help

A couple of years ago I decided to add to my US note collection and was faced with the same problem. It was a real easy fix. The disadvantages were I had to chat up the lovely girl at the foreign coin change exchange (she was cute anyway so no problem there) pay the current exchange rate and received a random selection. At least this avoided the crippling fees on postage. I simply asked the coin exchange girl for the best looking crisp US notes she had. She then went through a pile of notes and picked out the best looking notes she had. They were circulated but at least I had good looking notes from the US in a random selection. The best way to get what you are after with Aussie notes, besides a trip down under again is to get to know the people at one of the coin exchange places and get them to search their Aussie notes for first and last issue polymer notes for you. Hope this helps.

When we were planning a Fiji trip we bought notes from the bank. They were all uncirculated bundles with Fiji Reserve Bank bands. Tried to put a few aside but we ended up spending them all.

Thank you very much for the help. I had a feeling that shipping would cost a bloody arm and a leg, but I didnt know about the extra cost. I appreciate the offers to send stuff to me. I may take you up with that post new years. The advice on getting a pen-pal is taken to heart. I may or may not have a friend with whom I'm writing back and forth with (and may or may not have fallen in love but I digress. Perhaps I can ask her to send me something. Thanks again everyone. Who knows maybe I'll just look for an excuse to come back for a visit.
