I was looking at some Barber dimes that I have had for several years and took a closer look at this one. I thought the "S" had always been a little odd but never thought much of it. With a closer look I noticed a couple other things not quite right. The ribbon below the bow doesn't have the same surfaces as other Barber dimes. The second leaf to the left of the "S" looks like it has a second leaf below it. The oak leaf to the right also looks like it has a second leaf below it but is even more pronounced that the leaf on the left.
What is going on here?

If I remember correctly: Doubling on the Mintmark = Machine Doubling

I kinda thought Machine Doubling on the mintmark but didn't know about the leaves. Especially one as extreme as the oak leaf. I haven't seen enough doubling to really tell one type from another.
Kefiroth.... is the 1938 D/D Buffalo nickel a machine double?
I was hoping for something exotic but I am perfectly content with the high grade, original surface, 95 year old dime.
Thanks for the input.

That is an example of extreme machine/strike doubling.

There are no listed DDR's for the 1916 S, and that is not to say that there aren't any out there.

I have found many unlisted varieties on Barbers, and some are listed in Flynn's references.

And many more since.

So, I guess that is a long way to say:
Keep looking.

PS: The proper term is 'doubleD die'.
