Dug this up on Saturday here in Connecticut. I believe it to be a Machin's Mills halfpence since it is dated 1778. Any suggestions?

Looks like one to me as evident by the triangular denticles along the pereipheries, obverse. Great find!

Ok so three opinions say "yes". Should I even attempt to remove the surface dirt? If so, what do you recommend using? I have only soaked it in distilled water so far.

Personally, I would not do much more than that on these old coppers. At this point it looks original.

IMO, I think it looks alright the way it is. If you really want to get the dirt off try a very very light scrub with a soft toothbrush and warm water.
Rest in Peace

Even a light scrub, in tap water, can damage a coin. Use distilled water, or even olive oil, and be patient.
