While running around today stopped at atm to get some cash and 1 of the 20's was a fake. Didn't know it until I used it at a Wendy's to get some chow. Lady at the register said it was fake. I gave her a different one and went on my way. Got to looking at it when I left and sure enough no security strip or hologram. Sucks I'm out 20 bucks. Gonna start looking at all my money from now on no matter where it comes from.

Don't you have to turn that in to the Secret Service? Of course you will.

I would take it to the bank that handles your ATM. I don't know what they would do about it but if they wouldn't reimburse you, I would report them to the BBB or some other way, I would make it known publicly.

Turn it in to the authorities? Sure am, you better believe it. I don't think the bank would reimburse me for it. How to prove it came out of their machine. What ever I do with it will have to wait till I get back after the holidays.

According to my daughter (teller) it is illegal to possess counterfeit money in any form. Yes, they can be loaded into the teller machine. They were putting in 20's at the bank one day and came across a counterfeit. It had come in the previous day and had not been spotted.

Exactly why I never use ATMs... there's no one to blame when it happens. With a teller you can point the finger.

That note though, if I wasn't feeling it in hand would've fooled me, as well. That's a pretty good fake.

That's too bad it is fake, but did you check it with the special marker? If it passes, then it is real. Do it in a small area, in the corner, where it isn't noticeable, just in case it is real.

I wouldn't be surprised if the company that makes the "paper" made a mistake and it didn't get the security label in it. Since they make thousands of sheets each year, it is possible a sheet or more missed a step or something.

Just look what happened to the 2007 GW dollar coin. It missed a step and it didn't get the edge lettering on it. And they aren't considered to be counterfeit.

If it is a true fake, that is one heck of a counterfeiter though, since it has the water marks on it. And it looks like it has the hologram on it.

Also, banks will never reimburse for counterfeit money, since it is illegal for them to do transactions with counterfeit money.

If it is really a legal note, it should be worth a boat load of money. That is like winning the lottery!

I don't think it is a fake, but a sheet that missed a step in production. Won't know until the marker test is done.

I'll do some searching to see if that is possible or not and get back to you.

And don't forget. The security thread can only be seen when held up to the light. It appears vertically going through the second letter of the upper left side serial #.

There are security thread errors, so yours can be a legitimate error, if the thread is missing. Make sure you look carefully for it passing through the left serial #. You have to hold it up to a light to see it.

This is probably from the paper loaded the wrong way at the BEP though:

Don't count it as counterfeit until you really look it over and do the marker test on it. It looks too authentic to be fake.

Thanks for the wishful thinking wquinn. There is no doubt that this note is fake. The watermark is missing, there are no fibers in the paper and the inking under magnification is blurred so as to not see the minute details. Not that lucky to have an error bill.

That is too bad. Sorry to hear about that. What does the paper feel like?
