I was checking the cert number on a PCGS slabbed coin tonight when I noticed the PCGS Price Guide Value. Is this price that PCGS thinks the coin should sell for? Also the population report, is that how many of that grades there is? Little confused.

Thanks

PCGS' Price Guide is their "MSRP" for PCGS graded coins. It is high on most series and unless you shop at Legend Numismatics, you will find PCGS coins for much less in most cases.

The Pop Report notes the number of pieces graded by PCGS at the given grade.

Hope this helps!

Thanks BH,

The coin I was looking at was a PCGS Slabbed 1904-S Morgan in VF30. PCGS has it at $95.00 and the best price I have found so far is $132.00. So if I understand you correctly I should look for a better price? Thanks for your time.

As always...supply and demand. I have made some ebay offers according to Numismedia.com Fair Market Value, and was given quite a keystroke (tongue) lashing from some very insulted sellers. Needless to say that their items are still up for "Buy It Now" or "Make an Offer".

Looking at auction history reveals that if you must have a PCGS VF30 then $95 is going to be a bit difficult. $110 might be a better target but we're splitting hairs.

A piece with good eye appeal will likely be over $100, this is a better date. I'd pay $132 for an attractive piece in a PCGS VF30 holder. If you go with NGC or ANACS you should be able find a better price. I'd also look at a 25 or 35 to widen the pool.

For American coins, the pop report is as accurate as it can be, given that many numbers are likely to be over-estimates thanks to the crackout / crossover game.

For world coins, as I understand it, they only decided to start pop counts a few years ago; if a coin was slabbed by them before that, it may not have been entered into the data set yet. Updating the reports for world coins doesn't seem to be a high priority for them.

I am going back to the website and take another look, I do remember them having 25 and 35's. The non-slabbed ones I see on E-Bay do not look like the grades the sellers say they are and they want about the same money as the slabbed ones. Thanks to All for the education.

Any price guide has to be looked at as a minimum price for a coin at the bottom of that grade. A choice coin with great eye appeal will typically sell for more... sometimes much more. A beautifully toned MS-66 Washington quarter may go for $70 or $80 when PCGS says its "worth" $50. It's just a guide. It's not the real value.

Always remember that any Price Guide on coins is just basically a guess or estimate or possibilitiy, etc. There are so many of them and they are just basically similar since all are someone's ideas. The PCGS price Guide is one of those that is really excessive and I suspect the reason is to make people think their coins are really worth sending in for slabbing.
