Picked these up a few days ago - they were more expensive than I would normally pay but I'm not expecting any coins for Christmas and the Post Office seem to have managed to loose most of the items I bought last month. I was really happy with some of those too

Not fully attributed yet but its Philip II 243-244AD - 29mm 18 grams.

I think this could clean up very nicely as it looks to have a lot of details filled with crud. Similar to the coin below that looked a lot better after a bit of soaking and picking.

Gordian III 242-243AD - 30mm 17 grams.

The below coin has got me puzzled though - it was sold as Gordian III and I can possibly see '...IANVS AVG' at the end of the legend, certainly '...VS AVG'. However the reverse seems to show 'ANVII', Gordian coins stopped at 'ANV'. Anyone got any ideas as I'm stumped, its not in hand so all I have to work on are the pictures. The 'O' that seems to be in the legend above the head of the bust looks out of place to me so may be a red herring.

? - 28mm 12 grams.

I like this series because the coins are large and fairly easy to ID. The bust on the third coin doesn't look like Gordian III, but that could just the dirt and heavy green patina covering the face.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas.

A year VII has to be Philip but I suppose could be Philip II which I don't have to compare. If it could be AN XII the options are more (Decius, Gallus and their families). I don't see enough in the photo to disprove Gordian AN IIII but photos can be deceptive.

There are so many Roman coins I'm not aware of yet--it's great to see something new!
Nice patina on the first coin, and hope the rest make it by the post.
Merry Christmas everyone!

Well, these coins arrived today and as expected the first one does look like it will clean up well. Unfortunately I have ran out of distilled water so the details will have to stay crud filled for a while longer.

The second coin was a lot more interesting and Doug was correct:

Its much better in hand and the year is clearly 'XII' - I'll take some pics at some point. Its Hostilian, my first coin of his and the legend is something like:

C VAI HOST M QVINTVS CAE

The 'O' is a 'Q' and from what I can gather 'out of place' characters on these are not unusual, neither are mis-spellings.

Pretty happy, it only cost £5 and I seem to have done quite well looking at these prices (even knocking 50% off for this sellers reputation for high prices):
