As I add the National Parks (NP)to my collection of quarters I'm noticing a couple things about this group of "theme" coins
1. We live in Chicago and find the P mint quarters more common than D. Not sure why this is. The only reason I can think of is the Phila. minted coins are distributed in Chi, while the D's arrive only by trade. Any other reasons?

2. The NP issues (as well as Territory issues), in general, are less common than other quarters.

3. Finally, have there been any "mistakes" of the NP issues, if so, which ones and what are the mistake?

Thanks to all who reply!

1) you are correct... Philly coins are generally issued to banks east of the Mississippi River, Denver coins to the west. You will see older Denver coins as they circulate, but for current coins, it will just take some time.

2) The territories and ATB (America the Beautiful) quarters will take time to circulate. I believe the territory quarters have SLIGHTLY smaller mintage because there were 6 designs that year instead of 5, but they will eventually make it out into circulation. If you pick up a random roll from the bank today, you will see a few pre-1999 quarters, but plenty of State Quarters. I think if you picked up a roll in 5 years, you'd see plenty of territory and ATB Quarters.

3) I dunno. Maybe someone else will jump in here.

You are not going to see a lot of the Territories and DC quarters (which are actually with the State Quarters) as they did indeed have lower mintages. They have been out for over 2 years now and not much of anything. The park quarters are also having lower mintages, so you will also see fewer of those in circulation as well.

Mistakes...none that I am aware of so far.
Rest in Peace

In addition to the territories quarters mintages averaging about one tenth the mintage of most Statehood Quarters, banks could and did order quantities of each Statehood Quarter as they came out, allowing people to get them as soon as issued. Banks cannot specifically order the Parks quarters, they can just order quarters and hope they get some. They might get a box of the newest ones, but more likely a boxed of mixed up little bit of everything. And the parks mintages, though not as low as the territories, are still only 20 to 30% of what each Statehood Quarter was.

The Chickasaw quarter mintage is about 144 million, twice as many as the previous nine quarters. If you can get them in rolls of either mint, might have some premium value later. Still 144M is a small fraction of the State Quarters, most of whom were issued in excess of 500 million. The ATBs are a great series, excellent landscape designs on so small a surface. The 2012 designs are another good group of designs. Unfortunately, due to the low mintages they don't do much for the hobby as they are so seldom seen in everyday change.
