in 1986 the US Mint released a half dollar and a silver dollar commemorating the Statue of Liberty. It was the 100th anniversary of the Statue, which at the time was scaffolded and under renovation. At this time several third party mints, trying to capitalize on the "event" sold their own commemorative proof "double eagles" made of one ounce of silver.

Instead of getting me the official release, which he probably was unaware of, he ordered the faux commemoratives over the telephone. As a special bonus it came with a second silver "double eagle"- this one featuring Ronald Reagan.

Every time I see one of these third party mint coins advertised on tv I think back to those coins. Today's hilarious ad is for the Justice Coin, a tacky coin celebrating Seal Team Six delivering cold justice to UBL (or OBL to you non army intel types).

It's a super valuable coin, played in gold and can be hung as a Christmas ornament. It even has quotes on the back from two presidents and symbols of three crash sites. It's amazing.

$260 value for under 20 bucks

I would actually be nice if the mint did something like this and sent all the proceeds to families of the twin tower hero's or armed forces hero's

I don't do ads like this anymore since I foolishly bought those colorized Obama Inauguration coins that they had out a few years ago. I basically paid $9.95 + shipping for a defaced Presidential dollar and JFK half. Both were plated in 24 kt gold and colorized with a photo image of Obama on the obverse... if only I knew what I do now

I think I just threw up a little in the back of my throat... "Mints" like these seriously irk me as they tend to prey capitalize (quite specifically, as we can see) on people who do not know any better. It's the same kind of anger I feel about publishing companies that send "special offers" that look like overdue bills, or "extend your car coverage" scams.

What in the name of Victor David Brenner are they thinking?

I thought you couldn't call it a "coin" unless it was actually issued by a government. Mail fraud, and all that.

I don't know who the "Historic Coin Mint" are, but apparently, this medal is the only thing they've ever made. Sounds shifty to me.
