Just got this in my change today, kinda different. The reverse looks fine, everything is normal. On the obverse the rim is considerably wider and flat. The denticles are in the right place.
Any ideas?

Actually I've been scratching my head on this since you posted it. Could you remove it from the flip and retake the picture of the obverse? A shot of the rim would be excellent as well. thanks.
Rest in Peace

Thanks.

Look like the coin was placed on a sanding belt to me. I say that because everything is in the right place except the rim has been taken down from the convex surface we expect to a flat surface and the plating has peeled off on only one side of the coin also indicating post mint damage. I say this because there's no way to plate only one side of a coin without some intricate footwork.

It's very cool though, I've peeled a couple but not taken the rim down like this one. The upper nickel plating and middle copper plating usually come off together (90%) as the way these are cleaned between plating baths causes the bottom nickel and middle copper plate to be the weakest point in the plating layers.

I thought along those lines as well but when I got home and looked at it under 40X mag. The rim is as smooth as a baby's bottom, no scratches.

Well I said sandpaper, but it might been something like one of my polishing wheels, wouldn't leave a mark in silver that you could see but it will cut stainless.

I can accept any explanation for the rim actually because who really knows? Where it comes to down to PMD is one side is plated, one side is peeled. That led me down the path that barring some magic at the mint I've never heard of (quite possible) that the rim is likely part of the same PMD. If it had been struck like that, I'm pretty confident we'd see distress elsewhere, especially in the beads.

If anyone has any other ideas, by all means, lets hear them - even if you just want to chew at my speculation, it's all good.
Rest in Peace

Regardless of PMD, the date side looks unusual to me, like some sort of ring is encasing it.

The date side is normal, the scans stretch out the rim due to lens distortion.
