I am watching some auctions on ebay. Several bronze coins from this seller seem to be "painted" with some black substance. Look at the links below (check the close-up shot of the images) and tell me if I am imagining it. The Trajan seems like a steal but, the painting thing is bothering me, what do you all think?

They have been altered in some manner almost as if to hide something. I wouldn't touch them for fear of that they may all be fakes.

Well, I don't think they are fake just cleaned or painted in an ugly way

It may have more to do with the photography, B&W flash, that makes them dark gray and all look the same. Why?

I have never bought one here but a lot of people have. Some have looked tooled to me.

It's good your asking questions before jumping right in.

I would ask this seller plenty questions before I bought one.

Funny how small the world can be. I am watching these very same coins, at least most of them. One of my rules to myself is that if I have a bad feeling about any particular coin, I stay away. It's better to be safe and begin the hunt another day. However, I have bought from this seller several times in the past and have never been disappointed. His images always look the same. I just received two coins from him prior to Christmas. They are neither painted nor altered in any way I can tell. I should tell you they are so that there is less competition, right? I have even recommend this seller to others on this forum. Good luck.

I don't see any signs of being tooled or re-patination on any of these coins.

Poor photos of coins perhaps a bit too vigorously cleaned but genuine. We don't see very many black and white photos anymore.

Those are all better grade coins. I have bought some like these from certain auction houses that deal in ancients. If you look around you can find coins in better quality like these.
