I picked this up recently as a purely speculative piece, as it seems potentially interesting. The text closely matches that seen on many of the patterns and die trails made around the time of the re-coinage of 1860. I've checked in Freeman and as many bronze coin references as I have, and have so far been unsuccessful in finding direct reference to anything like this.
While stylistically the bust is similar to the types being considered at that time, the hair net at the back is not seen on any coins that made it to the pattern phase of development. I am wondering if this could be a tentative early design in plaster by someone such as Wyon which was rejected and reworked before the reaching the stage of designing the dies for the various patterns made around 1859 -60. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, they would be most welcome.
64mm, plaster. Blank reverse.
