I see this question asked a lot. While looking through my Jefferson nickels to see if I had any of those Henning ones after the last one was posted I found one of my 1946's had what appeared to be doubling on the reverse noticable on the PLURIBUS. Since I couldn't get a good picture I left it for another day.

Last night while researching die clashes on my SLQ's I came across this site which had a great picture differentiating Machine Doubling and double dies. It seems the main differentiating point is that on a double die all of the doubling will be the same height and width. On Machine Doubling one layer will be flat and one will be taller. As a complete novice I found this to be the best picture / explanation I have come across.

They also have some good pictures and explanations of other errors as well but the forum seems to delete the link for some reason.

Heh, been a while since I drew that. I should probably gussy it up a little and use it for my website.

Oh, BTW, the term is 'doubled die' - not 'double die'

That's a great drawing--I have looked for it a few times myself.

very nice. The forum should attach that in the glossary for these terms or something. It would be a very helpful tool for a lot of people I think

PS: It was not your site I found it on so someone must have "borrowed" it from you. Let me know if you want the link to yell at them or at least have them credit you.

Here's the best pics I could get of my 1946 with Machine Doubling around the PLU. Nothing special, just the first one I have come across.

OK, I'm sitting here with both copies of your book, Looking through Lincoln Cents and can not find those in there. Did I miss them in the books? Or did you leave them out for the Third Edition?
