Was wondering if anyone recognised the device to the right of the figure on the bottom right coin. Its a vertical line with dots down each side of it, not had a chance to do much research but I dont recall anything like it on official Gallic coins

Um, I know I'm going to show my ignorance here, but you guys have put up with me so far. Does the 'Barb' stand for barbaric? Thanks. I really can't wait to get my reference and history books :)

Barbaric imitations. Some of these could prove to be unofficial imitations, but most look barbaric. During the later empire, when the empire was shrinking and pulling back from some of it's conquests, they left a void for something to be used in the place of official coinage. That's just one of many theories.

So they are like fourrcee coins? But made by the local people after the Romans departed to have some sort of currency? They certainly are interesting looking.

I am not certain where exactly these coins came from but should know soon. I always like to put a little history to my coins. I will let it be know as soon as I get the answer. Thanks for the coins bobbyhelmet. I have been busy working during the holidays so havent had much time to get online.
