I am new to collecting coins and and most of my interest is in Commemoratives. Today I went to a small coin show and Got this 1893 Columbian Half Dollar. After giving a better look at it when I got home, I noticed its very shiny. I am assuming the coin has been cleaned? Can anyone confirm my worry that it has been cleaned? Thanks!

If better pictures are needed just let me know.

better pics will probably be needed. It doesn't have the polished look of harsh cleaning, but you want to see if there are hairline scratches with many going in the same direction.

Ok Thanks, I'll try to get better pictures up in a little bit. From what I can see there aren't many scratches and they do not look like there going in the same direction. I got the coin for 12 dollars. If it ended up being cleaned, it wouldn't be that bad of a "hit."

They made more Columbians than regular issue Barbers, so it's not unusual to find uncs. I bought a nice circ 93 this afternoon.

Does not appear cleaned as best as I can tell from the pictures. Kind of looks like a nice AU-55, a good deal at $12.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I can't get anymore pics up because it looks like my family's camera is broken and needs to be replaced. After looking at the coin it does not seem to have any hairline scratches going in the same direction. Looks like I got my money's worth and it is an awesome coin. Thanks for your guys help again.

to the CCF ... and to the wonderful world of commemorative.

Your small photos are not definitive ... but I don't see any obvious signs of a harsh cleaning.

Nice score indeed for $12!

I would buy that coin for $12 in a heartbeat. Like the others it does not look cleaned to me.
