Several years ago I bought three Cast Korean pieces that I wondered about at the time but have not known where to get any info on them. They are all three M-40.1.6, Ch'unch'on Township Military Office KM-874.6. They have been painted, two with red and one with blue on the obverse and the opposite color on the reverse. They are in great condition. Are they modern reproductions meant for the tourist trade? Perhaps contemporary reproductions meant as charms? Any info is appreciated!

The Koreans apparently like painting their coin charms. I found a similar piece here on zeno.ru, different mint but very similar style. See also the book quotes in the entry for this other charm.

I would guess, given the identical appearance of all three of your pieces and the porous-looking outer rims, that yours are modern reproductions specifically made to be turned into charms.

Hi. Just joined this forum, based on the coins that you showed in your question. So, I don't know if your question has been answered or not.
Those coins are real....not fake....and in fact are very very desirable collectable Korean coins. They were probably part of a group of coins, maybe joined together to make a pattern of coins, and would have been presented to a young lady upon her getting married. Don't take them to a coin dealer and sell them. Have them auctioned off. (Or wait until I have enough posts to offer for them.) You have some good coins there. Not the most expensive, but they will do well for a starter collection, for sure

And, I forgot to add, these are 5 mun coins, dating to the 1880s, and are from one of the more desirable mints in the 5-mun series. And, they are in beautiful shape. (I really do hope that you haven't sold them yet, especially to a coin dealer at a fraction of their value.)

Thank you for your reply to my old post. Sorry I did not notice it when it was fresh. I have been distracted the past month or so and have not paid much attention to this site or my coin collecting. Thank you for the information on the coins. I do still have them.
