My first topic of the new year :) I just got this coin in the mail, I thought it was worth every penny. What do you think authentic or not?

I have to add that both weight and diameter are within the limits.

I have not seen what I thought to be a certain fake with the MONETAE AVG reverse but there is still something about the (too good?) surfaces of this one that makes be uncomfortable. The style and lettering look correct and I would accept the spirit of it if it were a Septimius Severus but I am not comfortable saying a $1000 coin is good based on a photo or on my limited experience with Niger.

Wow! Nice coin. If this proves to be genuine, they are difficult and expensive to come by. I cannot tell you for sure from the image if this is genuine, but it looks it to me. I am assuming that since "it was worth every penny" you got it at a good price. Do you know the seller and is it guaranteed?

I got this coin for 165$ and it's my third coin from this seller, the previous two were genuine.

The price you paid seems too good to be true. I am slightly unhappy about the obverse style.
Fabulous coin if it does prove to be genuine, because coins of this emperor, as you may well know, can be quite pricey. I would have attempted to authenticate this coin before committing myself to buy it, with so much at stake.
Is it possible to supply us with a few details of the seller? Perhaps we may be able to assure you if his reputation is good. With ancients of this value, I always try to prove the provenance of the coin first, unless the seller has a world class reputation. I have always done that.
With the expensive ancients in my collection, I keep all of the sales documentation and photographs relating to the coin so they can be sold at auction. Some of this information for my ancients dates back more than 40 years.

In the country I currently reside in, selling and buying ancient coins is illegal. That's why there are no reputable dealers here, so everything you buy is through private auctions or from somebody who knows somebody who's selling. That's why the price is always too good to be true, people dig, they find coins but they can't sell them abroad and sell them here at incredibly low price. And of course like in every country you can come across to a very good fake coin. From all the coins I purchased here only one was fake, so it's worth the risk every time. It's gonna take some time for me to get it authenticated, because I don't travel to the US that often anymore.

My first impression when I saw this coin was that it had to be a fake, but than I checked some images of genuine examples. This coin appears to be 100% genuine. Excellent coin for a fantastic price.

rusvbg: As far as ancient coins are concerned, I wish I was living in Bulgaria because there is so much evidence of the Roman Empire that has been left behind, no wonder people who are interested dig for coins. Unfortunately, in the part of the World where you live, some excellent fakes of ancient coins have come, as well as from the Middle East.
American collectors are currently being scourged with a huge number of fakes that have come from China, where laws that prevent the manufacture of fake coins seem to be non existant or useless. This has happened with a lot of intellectual property and software as well.
I guess there are many active metal detectorists in Bulgaria. In Australia, if you have a detector, you go after natural gold nuggets, not coins.
I suggest that you should get all of the coins you suspect authenticated. Is is possible to send these to the United Kingdom to someone who may be able to offer good professional opinion?

Hard to survive in Bulgaria when you arent Bulgarian because big part of bulgarians aways search way to prank the peapole from other countires. But if you want just take metal detector with coil 50 sm and with discrimination and dig whatever you want like I do in the summer

I found it interesting how many replica coins ( реплика ) were openly listed on the Bulgarian auction site. Most offerings looked like recent field finds (except for the Vietnamese cash lots). Is there a local demand for replicas?

Thank you for all the replies.
@t0rress Ot potrebitel v auction si q vzeh, I predi sym si kupuval ot nego, prati mi snimki I se dogovorixme
@sel_69l I was thinking about sending the coin either to Great Britain or to Germany so I can get a certificate, but I don't trust those services + I won't send a coin like this with the Bulgarian postal service. I prefer going there in person, but again it's gonna take some time.
@dougsmit I don't know why but this started maybe a month or two ago. People started listing replica coins. I don\t know why, but I noticed many people buy replicas. Maybe people buy such coins because of the silver - prices going up, because most of the coins I saw were with the weight of sestertius.

Is there a local demand for replicas? @dougsmit like rusevbg sayd one seller sells replics of coins who are made by silver, bronze or gold and some users buy them only for the material (silver or gold). And you watch the site " auction.bg " ?
