Now before you say move this post.....My question is about buying gold nuggets!
In the mid 1800's alot of folks out West here used "Gold Dust" and/or nuggets as cash. I do some living history were I portray common folks, miners, etc... from the time period. I have some coins and etc.... but would like to get some Gold Dust/nuggets to put in a glass jar for show/tell. I have seen the fake gold nuggets,(like the fake gold coins...no good), but would lik eto show people the real stuff!
Can anyone offer any advise?
I see Aussie gold, Alaska, Cali., Yukan, etc... and they all seem to be priced differant per their gram weight. Better to stay away from the big nuggets and just look for small?
Cost is an issue here and I would like to get the most bang for my buck.... or the most Gold for my Green.
Many Thanks, Paul.

If I was gonna tie any money at all up in it, I would get it from one of those guys selling from Australia or the Yukon river. Miners who sell their good nuggets on ebay. Try and find nuggets anywhere from say a half a gram to a full gram. Now that would be more costly, but you would have some decent value in that jar and they would be much more collectible IMO. And it would be way more valuable then the ones the tourist shops sell the gold flake jars at ten bucks, while they may have just a dollar or two of their own money tied up in each jar....

Depending on how many of those little trace nuggets you buy, it could get real costly real fast however....

As a rule of thumb, small unrefined natural gold nuggets without included rock, bring twice the price, weight for weight, as small pieces of pure gold bullion. There is a lot of mineral collector demand out there to help explain this. That price variation is less for larger nuggets. Most people with not a lot of money to spend will buy the smaller nuggets.

There can be a lot of fake gold nuggets around as well! Normally, poor alloy gold coins are melted, and the liquid is poured from some considerable height into water. The nugget partially forms as it cools while falling, and the shape is somewhat further modified as it hits the water. They can look very convincing to the uneducated. Even tiny rocks can be included by having a bed of them in the water pan. You can even fake them without using water, for further variation.
