Here's a trade to go long the precious metal:

GLD MARCH12 170 CALL (Debit of 1.85)

As a stand alone hedge, meaning that you are not factoring in any hedge to the equation, exit the trade at a 100% gain or a 50% loss.

*****

In English, you pay $185 for the right to buy 10 oz of gold for $17,000. GLD will have to hit 171.85 plus brokerage fees for you to break even. If GLD hits 173.70, you double your money. If the value of your option drops to $92.50, sell and take your loss.

Call me an ignorant chicken but I still think these long and short calls are a step away from becoming a booth at a Vegas casino. I want the option (pun intended) to sit on my investment until the opportune time to sell. I would buy mining stocks or ETFs if not physical before I would ever consider these option-restricted options.

But hey, maybe that's why I'm not a millionaire (yet ) (or flat broke... thin line)

Gold is not an investment, but rather a hedge against inflation IMO.

There are a lot of ways of looking at gold and other precious metals. Some see them as investments, others as a hedge against inflation, and still others as just something fun and interesting to collect. So, which of these is correct? Well, that all depends on you and how you look at it.

I am not a gold collector but I do collect silver and enjoy it quite a lot. It is VERY volatile but that's OK with me, as there IS opportunity in volatility. I never invest any money that I need to use for anything else within the next 3-5 years, so do have time to ride out the market drops. In fact, they are pretty useful as dollar cost average buying opportunities.

In regards to inflation, put (ha!) it this way: will we ever see a decrease in the amount of circulating paper bills in our lifetime? Maybe if it all became electronic via a transitional period, but think about how many people would resist that. Call me crazy. :)

That call option looks very optimistic to me. I think it is kind of a tossup AT THE MOMENT that one could make any money on it.

I sure hope not. Considering how easy it was for MF Global to fleece its clients, a world-wide electronic currency system just BEGS for routine abuse.

Hedges against inflation are by definition investments.
