After some thought and hope for an increase in income in the near future I've decided to start a key/semi key date type set in G-F condition. I have probably completely lost my mind trying to accomplish this....However my time frame doesn't make it too outlandish.....I want to finish it by the time I retire.....and I figure I have 30 years before that happens....this will be my lifetime set. And I started the journey off with a 32-D Washington quarter woohoo. Hopefully I'll see you guys around in 30 years when I finish it. Am also trying to complete a Buffalo nickel set (just started), Morgan dollar set (6 left). Walking Liberty half set....halfway done, and a second type set in XF or better condition......I think this hobby is going to break me eventually.

Yes, most sets are expensive to complete, but they are fun and rewarding also.
Good luck and I hope you can make it.
What years are your type sets representing? It sounds like it is a 20th century key/semi-key date type set?
I am working on a 19th and 20th century type set myself, based upon the different coin types and not key dates.

It's the Dansco 7070 type set basically 19th and 20th century.....it's the older keys that make this one tough.

Your pinto must be a tubbed sleeper with a big block V-8. That XF 7070 set will run you some $. That is a nice target though.

I just sold a 74 plymouth duster sleeper car with a 440 under the hood and around 700 HP......so I do like sleepers. I haven't figured out if the XF set with more common dates will cost me more than a key date set in G-F .....I'm thinking they will be pretty close.....depending what keys/semi keys I pick.

with Dave. Speaking from experience here, but a XF+ & > 7070 is certainly something to pass down. In today's current market that's about a $22-25K investment. You've certainly set yourself some wonderful goals to strive for however. PG

That explains it...I hope at least some of that $ from your 440 Duster made it back to your collection.

some duster money has found itself in my coin account. Have a separate bank account for coin transactions.....that way I don't get myself in too much trouble

Do you have a game plan, or just going to wing it and pick some up whenever you can find them? Just curious if you're going to go for the more expensive coins now or later. In any case, good luck, and...WE WANT PICS!

I do have a game plan but is restricted by budget as always. As I find a good deal and my budget permits I'll pick up a coin to fill the hole. Or if I find an incredible deal on something that I know I can flip or trade on a need I'll do that. I've built up a pretty good relationship with 2 of my local dealers and for the most part they offer their coins to me close to wholesale. I have a list of key and semi key dates to look for. I actually just got back in to this hobby a little over a year ago and I feel like I've learned a lot. I've started to dump my problem coins that were purchased out of ignorance. There are certain series I am comfortable with purchasing with my knowledge.....however some others I will either purchase slabbed or will get your opinions before actually purchasing. My patience has grown a lot over this year. I won't buy a coin to fill a hole unless I'm satisfied with it. I'l be posting pics as I purchase.

I think I have about 16k in my 7070 album but gold was about 600 an ounce at the time. At todays market the album is probably around 30k, the last time I sat down and added everything up with the CDN ask price it was around 26k and that was over 2 years ago. Speaking of cars though, specifically Mopars (Yes I am a MOPAR fanatic) did you happen to see the Hemi cuda convertible that sold in scottsdale? here is a link to it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbDFK3OQ0sU

A 7070 made up of keys and semi-keys may sound like a challenge, but he is building it over a long period and when it comes time to sell he will get a LOT of eager interest from buyers. Think about it. Your typical dealer gets in a lot of type sets mostly filled with average common coins. Every now and then one walks in filled with VF or better coins and these generate a lot more interest. Now think of one walking in filled with Key date coins! EVERY coin in that set is going to be a fast mover and the dealer is going to love it. I did something similar with a twentieth century type set. Dealers see those all the time as well, but they don't see them completely, or as completely as possible, made up of proof coins (No proof steel cent, Standing quarter, or Peace dollar.) I still need the Barber quarter and half to complete the set.
