Another coin I purchased today. I'm wondering what you folks think this 1851 Gold Dollar grades at. The wear on the date conflicts somewhat with the detail remaining on the obverse. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
XoG

Those are generally weakly struck in the centers. I'd say vf/xf

XF-45 especially if some luster left

The weak date is not really wear. It's just lightly struck in that area usually because it's opposite the higher relief details of the obverse hair and coronet.

Looks XF or so.

It's not just the date itself that has wear, it is the area surrounding it as well, which includes part of the word 'DOLLAR'. Can't quite make up my mind if it is a weak strike and wearin that area, or just wear.

I have noticed that the rim denticles are typically weak strike with these coins.

Obvious wear on the high areas of Liberty's hair, rims OK.

Not quite XF to me. I have a '53, grades a tad better.

Thanks guys! The dealer who sold it to me thought it was in good, though I knew at the time it must grade higher than that. At the price I bought it at, it could have been a complete cull and I still would have been happy.

Looks at least EF-40 to me with the apparent luster suggesting EF-45 is possible. As noted the date and DOLLAR weakness is probably strike-related. Surfaces looks original with no cleaning evidence that I see. That diagonal cut across the hair bun catches my eye and is a bit distracting.

A worthy example for a circulated type set, and sounds like the price was right. Congrats!
