I don't think that a planchet issue, I think it's a die issue. Either way this is a nice one.

Right - cracked die. But only a google images search of 'cracked planchet' pulls up pictures like mine. What should it be called?

Bisecting die crack with an internal retained die break. This die probably didn't last much longer.

thanks Conder! I changed the title appropriately. Very cool find, can't imagine there are many others.

I don't consider small die cracks errors but this one is extreme. Very nice error coin.

This would be properly termed a "split die" error. It's straddled by an area where the die face sank in (a "die subsidence" or "sunken die" error). I'm uncomfortable calling it a retained interior die break because only the right side of the bulge is sharply demarcated. However, the two error types tend to grade into each other.

Thanks mike. I just read your piece for Coin World about these errors and was hoping you would chime in! Any clue how many coins can be struck before the die fails (or what the average could be)?

Rest in Peace

I think you are correct! They sure look like kissin cousins. I'm not too sure how to interpret stages of breaks, but I would venture to say this one is a bit earlier than rob's, but not by much.

Rob's coin break looks a bit more profound, pronouonced, bigger ? (if that is the correct term to use) Just a hunch...
