Local store has Sterilte ClearView storage bins for sale at really cheap prices. A look at Sterilite's website says it's products are made of polypropylene and polyethylene and are acid-free and PVC free. A more detailed description is given at:

My question: assuming I add desiccant, can I trust my coins to be safe in these?

Thanks in advance,
Brian

Safe, I have one of these.

Keep in mind, this would be for the outer layer of protection as they are not air tight. Keep your coins in freezer type ziplocks as the next layer. MO LAYERS = MO PROTECTION

hard/stiff plastics are better than soft ones.

So, BadThad and others, how about the hard plastic containers as the first layer, and the really large Ziploc or Hefty One-Zip bags (sealed with desiccant placed therein) as the second layer? I believe these are also made of polyethylene.

Yes, always use multiple layers, ziplocks are great especially with desiccant packs. I even double bag some stuff....i.e. a few small bags in a bigger one.

I keep all my Albums in Zip Lock bags. The best Albums are in doubled bags. With those no further plastic tubs should be required since most are just for storage and not ment to protect against air and moisture.

The ideal thing would be zip-top bags made of aluminized mylar - much stronger barrier than a regular zip-lock bag. Thrown in a bag of dessicant and you're golden. Anybody know where to get such bags of an appropriate size?

It makes them an even better barrier to harmful gases. Mylar (boPET) is a very good barrier, but like all plastics, it's not a perfect barrier. That's why mylar balloons use aluminized mylar - helium is a particularly sneaky gas. Obviously, nobody's worried about their coins being attacked by helium, but you see medical stuff and food things sealed in metalized plastic bags for the same reason.
