This is my first U.S. large cent. I am pleased with it. Any thoughts on grade? Thanks in advance.

I'd be pleased if I were you, as well.

No worse than AU55, I think, with just the slightest of doubts as to the originality of the surfaces. And at that, it happened a long time ago if it did at all.
Rest in Peace

That's a nice large cent. The picture of the obverse is a bit fuzzy but it appears to be in AU condition. This is a great series to collect. Most coins back to about 1840 are very affordable in high grade. I would be pleased also. congrats!

Looks like a AU to me. Surfaces look a bit off.
Rest in Peace

Thanks for the responses. I paid less than an EF catalog value for it so I feel pretty good.

I have some Canadian large cents but I like the U.S. one better.

I agree with AU-50. You generally won't see that much hair detail on EF coins. These later-date large cents usually have blunt detail on the stars and frequently the denticles are weak. This coin is maybe below average on star detail, above average for denticles.

The color looks off to me also; likely re-toned after an old cleaning. Still a decent type example!
