Howdy everyone! I'm new to the forum and pretty unfamiliar with foreign coins. I mainly collect US Currency and coins...

I was told that the coin pictured below was from the Peking mint Kung-Pu Board of Public Works and was minted between 1821 and 1851.

Can anyone confirm this and possible provide more detail including a KM# ?

Hello, Eyes, and welcome to the forum.
Yes, indeed this is a cash coin issued during Hsuan Tsung, 1821 - 1851, but, I believe it was done by the Board of Revenue in Peking, not the Board of Public Works. In the Krause it is C# 1-3

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Poland Coins is incorrect; the writing is completely different. Whoever told you the date is partially correct, this coin is from the Dao Guang emperor (1820-1850), but it's actually Board of Revenue mint, not Board of Works.

Krause isn't the best guide for Chinese cash coins, but for a non-world-coins collector it's usually good enough. It's either KM/C# 1-3 or 2-3 - I can't tell, I'm working off the NGC price guide which doesn't have pics, or very good descriptions. 1-3, from memory.

What's got me puzzled is the coin appears to be "unfinished". It still has the casting sprue attached - this is usually filed off before the coin is issued. It may be an unofficial coin (that is, a privately-made counterfeit). I'll have to check my references when I get home from work.

No, Sap is more thorough, and that takes time!
