Hi all,
My new forum friend/santa :) Muckeye, has peaked my interest in Aussie coins, and
has fixed me up good with some starters.I particularly like the
20 cent and 50 cent peice.I look forward to dabbling into a little
bit of everything though.I must say I am impressed with what I have
seen so far, with designs.I like all the ones put out in 2001 for
sure.Muckeye sent me the pocket guide to Australian coins and
bank notes,so I got some studying up to do.But if anyone has any helpful advice,I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
:) sn31.

Hi sn31, we sure have plenty to choose from. Apparently for 2007 we will have about 9 different $1 coins alone!

Good hunting.

sn31, Welcome to Aussie coin collecting. Muckeye was clever in sending you that guide, it's sure to hook you in to collecting these coins.

Here is a bit of helpful advice. The prices given in the guide are on the high side. Most of the coins can be purchased at lower costs. The other big benefit for you is that the prices shown are in Australian Dollars, so it will cost you probably around 20% less. Also Australians have to pay a 10% goods and services TAX which you should not have to pay.

Many of the designs of the 50c pieces are in circulation as well as the various dollar designs. But many of the designs are not in circulation and are for collectors only (NCLT) Non Circulating Legal Tender. While you will find the mintages to be low, there are many issues every year. Hard to keep up sometimes. Some are very good value at issue price, while others the price is sure to fall, loosing money. There are many of these NCLT sold in Australia for less than Issue price.

The 2 Mints in Australia are the Royal Australian Mint (which also issues our circulatiing coins) and The Perth Mint (which issues Bullion coins and no circulating coins). Here are the links to their sites.

Hope this helps.
Cheers

If I could recommend taking a look at the silver kangaroo and Kookaburra series, they are very nice. Also the new $1 colour coin series which look great and the kids like them too.

Thanks everyone for the welcome, websites, and helpful advice.I am interested in seeing the 2007 dollar coins, but in fact after serching through some of the guide book, there are alot of them I would be interested in.

My dealer gave me a 1928 six pence with my order a few days ago. These are some that I might enjoy obtaining,as well as collector coins.

I've got a binder started for just my Aussie coins alone, and Bob has given me a great start.

I'll check out these websites posted, and hope I don't get too annoying with the many questions,I will probably have to ask :)

Snooba,I replied to your email,I hope you received it.Sometimes they are delayed.

Thanks for all your help, and kindness.
:) sn31.

sn31,
This year the Royal Australian Mint is outdoing themselves with 2007 $1 coins.
Some of these are listed in the Guide and some coins the news of them has just broken.

1. 2007 Mob of Roos (released in the Uncirculated Mint set), This is the standard design of Australian Circulated dollars featuring 5 Kangaroos. The Proof version of this coin is only found in the "baby" Proof set.

2. 2007 Lifesaver Dollar, This design will only be released in the Mints Proof Set showing three lifeguards carring a forth thru low water.

3. 2007 Norman Lindsay Dollar, This design will only be released in the Baby Uncirculated Set and features a portrait of Norman Lindsay and some of his character drawings.

4. 2007 Ashes Dollar, This design is of an ern with the Australian Kangaroo and the English Lion, celebrating 125 years of the "Ashes series" of Cricket games. Australia has just won the series 5 - 0 in very convincing style.

5. 2007 Year of the Pig Dollar, This is the start of a Lunar series of coins this size. Features a pig and chinese characters. My understanding is that it really should be the year of the "wild boar" (a rose by any other name).

6. 2007 Sydney Harbour Bridge Dollar, This is what is called a "mint mark dollar" First released on January first from the RAM (Royal Australian Mint) in Canberra on small "mint your own" presses in the gallery. The mint marks Here are C. The RAM have a portable press which they sometimes take to coin shows. The coins at the shows then have a "S" for Sydney, B for Brisbane, "M" for Melbourne mintmarks. Because demand for these is high the mint also mints coins with these mint marks in Canberra. These coins are made on the larger presses and Australian collectors collect both the Canberra made Mint mark and the coin Show mint marks as there is a slight difference due to the method of minting.
So 4 different mint mark letters and 2 varieties of this design.

7. 2007 Ocean series Dollar, the first will feature a Longfin Banner Fish.
and will be available on the 1st of February. This coin series uses coloured pad printing of the design on the reverse of the coin, very pretty.

8. 2007 Ocean series Dollar, the second in 2007 will feature a Biscuit Star Fish and will also be available on 1st of February.

9. 2007 Ocean series Dollar, #3 to be released later in the year.

10. 2007 Ocean series Dollar, #4 to be released later in the year.

11. 2007 APEC Dollar, (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) the next conference will be held in Sydney. The design is of 3 wavy 7 pointed stars within one another. Soon to be released, and will be a circulating coin.

12. 2007 Polar Dollar, This coin is being released also on 1st of February and is part of a series with 3 different $5 coins. There is a boat featured on this coin.

These are all Al-Br 25mm coins which I call "Look a Like" coins as they are the same size and material and could pass for circulating currency.

There are also a Silver Dollar the same size and design for The Sydney Harbour Bridge coin, as well as the Year of the Pig.

There is also a 2007 Silver Set of coins to be released in March which will contain a Silver dollar.

In addition to that there is the Larger silver kangaroo dollar in proof, in UNC and a Cu-Ni version.

The Subscription Dollar this year will feature the Johanna Dollar in gold plating on a silver coin.

The above Dollar coins are produced by the Royal Australian Mint.

The Perth Mint have some more Dollars to collect. They have just released the 2007 Lunar Holey Dollar and Dump (25 c). They also have a different design of the Year of the Pig on a 1oz silver Dollar coin.

The RAM coins usually are more favored by the majority of Australian collectors but there are exceptions.

Before everybody gets to thinking that I was overly generous to Sandra, it was only last year's catalogue that I sent her, the 13th. edition. Plus I included a few decimal coins as a bait, I think (hope) we may have another recruit for our 'secret agenda'
regards,

Hi all,
I have been looking at some Lunar Coin Series and I think I would like to start collecting these. I am only interested in the horse [1954], the ox [1973], the tiger [1986] and the rooster [1957] series. Metal in silver [gold is too high priced for my budget]. Are they hard to come by? Here is one I found...
http://www.pandaamerica.com/details...p=1&categ=19

I would also like to start with 2007 and/or 2006 if not earlier.
Thanks.

Mila_cent: You could try the following coin dealer, I believe that they would have all the Australian lunar coins that you are looking for.

http://www.prospectstampsandcoins.c...ns/index.htm

They have every lunar coin for each year that the Perth Mint has produced in the 1/2 ounce, 1 ounce, and 2 ounce silver coins. Keep in mind that the prices that they quote are in Australian dollars which will make it cheaper for you to purchase.
