Hey team,

Just wondering if it would be worth investing a little in the "mint your own coin" thing in brissie in april? If I can make it I'll be getting a few to put in my collection but was wondering if I should get a few extra and put them away as an investment? as I doubt I'll ever make a sydney or canberra and as for perth

Thanks team

With anything numismatic that have bought, I have never considered as investment.
In this regard, the only thing I have considered at the time of purchase is:
'Is what I am about to buy is really outstanding value for money?'
After the purchase, that idea is deliberately and completely forgotten.

I have never sold anything excapt when it has been totally obvious that it has been the corect action to take. That has happened once, when I was raising a deposit for a house. The collection sold at the time represented about 15% of the value of the house.

The current collection has been growing steadily and continuosly for the last 35 years. When My eyes fail, it will be auctioned, the proceeds given to my kids. They can pick and choose which coins to keep, and not proceed to auction.

The critical question on 'Mint Your Own', at the time of considered purchase, has to be asked and answered for yourself.

I did the 'Mint Your Own' once only, when I was visiting Canberra on a holiday. In my case, that visit has turned out to be highly profitable, because Barcelona dollars were being minted on that occasion.

Well last years ones average $19ea on ebay.
You buy them for $10ea at the ANDA shows.

I collect them because I like them.
I really like them because they are based on the pre-decimal currency, but when they change it next year to a completely different design I will probably not make an effort with them.

I managed to swap with people on the forum to make the full set last year and that was Fantastic.

But now my brother wants a set, so this year I may have to collect 2 sets and that would be a total nightmare for me as trying to get one set together really stretched me last year.

I would say that they are not going to loose money on them in the long run, they are a small mintage coin, and if you don't list them on ebay with a 99c start bid then you would be ok.

I am holding onto my set as a long term investment, in fact I never really want to get rid of them because I like them so much + the fact that I have fantastic memories of actually stamping the coin and enjoying the ANDA show, plus I went and visited my family while I was in Melbourne it was such a great day for me.

I say if you got the money to spend then go for it, they have a limit of 5 per person, I had my folks with me last year and we got 6, if I had hindsight we would of took our limit of 15.
