Hey there, I don't know much about gold so I thought I'd ask you guys. Here is a 1907 double eagle that belongs to my grandma. It is on a necklace of hers and she wanted me to see how much it is worth. I was on the go so I just snapped a quick photo of the obverse with my phone, sorry for the lack of reverse. But my question is, do these bad boys hold any premium over melt price? If so then how much. Without seeing the reverse, what price tag would you place on this?

After it's been in a bezel it is only worth spot to me. APMEX sells cleaned ones for $1661 as of now, but I wouldn't pay anything above spot because of the damage. I can't vouch for anybody else, but to me it has lost the numismatic premium.

It is still a family piece for you so I suggest holding on to it.
Rest in Peace

If it has unusual wear from one side rubbing, or scratches from the mounting, it's scrap value. If undamaged, a bit more, but it's still just a bullion coin.

ex jewelery coins will always be ex-jewelery coins and they are considered damaged. If the coin wasn't in a bezel like its in then yes it has a premium over spot, but with the damage of being worn in jewelery reduces its value quite a bit. Numismedia has a 1907 listed as being worth $1,870 in G4 condition and $1,930 in AU, so theres not allot of price difference between grades and with this being ex-jewelery (once its out of the bezel) it will not get what problem free versions would bring

I think the numismedia prices are based on a spot price higher than what we have now. The AU Double Eagles go for $1765.00 on APMEX, and considering they don't have the cheapest prices around, the price at a shop would likely be less.

I know, I know, I always hated the fact that it is in a bezel. My wife has a gold eagle $10 that her grandma had given her when she died. That one as well is in the bezel on a necklace and it drives me crazy.

So I guess I could tell her it is worth melt value unless it is taken off the necklace and if it lacks damage from being in the bezel. so probably $1600 to $1650 for this gold piece alone?
