Hi,

I just received a credit suisse "1 oz" platinum bar. My others have always said "one ounce". Is this new or is this fake? In addition, the serial number is very hard to read unless in direct light and the length of the number is just barely longer than the "essayeur fondeur" box. My others are much longer. I did not receive an assay card with the bar. I bought it at Lear Capital. Should I be worried?

Thanks,

Sounds suspicious have you weighted and measure it? Also can you post some pictures of this?

While LC would not be my first choice for PM's I doubt they would sell you a fake. I mean anything is possible but very unlikely.

You probably can find some info on weight, size etc to try and confirm the validity of the bar. You could also call LC and talk to them.

I don't know of any fake CS 1 oz platinum bard but the Chinese are always two steps ahead.

I can't offer any more on your question without taking wild speculative guesses.

Platinum is such an extremely dense metal that it would be difficult to create a convincing fake so get some measurements on it and compare the physical size to your other bars.

Light it up! Take a torch to that baby! Get it all red and glowing.... if it goes back to normal when the heat is removed you can be sure it is PLAT....

A good scale and a set of calipers should tell you what's what. All the easier since you have other bars to compare it to

I've attached a couple of pictures. Everything seems good, I've just never seen "1 oz", except for one guy selling them on ebay. Also the serial number looks different - It's very hard to see except in direct light. You can see it in the photo because the flash lights it up. I don't own any calipers at the moment because I mostly buy American Eagles and Maple Leafs, but with Platinum down I decided to buy some.
Where would you guys recommend buying bullion?

Thanks,

Hard to tell if it is real since I don't deal with platinum or bars that much. As for buying bullions' there are many shops online you can buy from (Apmex, Goldeneaglecoins, Kitco, Tulving etc) or your local coin shop.

if you are worried about fakes and don't have the means to triple check, I would suggest the larger dealers like APMEX, Provident, Kitco, and others depending on where you are on ze planet.

Thanks for the responses. I measured the bar and the length and width were approximately 38 mm x 20 mm. I've been reading that the length should be 41.2 x 24.1. Is this correct? I cannot compare them to other bars in my possession because this is the only one I've ever bought. I don't own any others, I just didn't want to sound like I was panicking because my bar didn't look like other bars I saw on the internet and thought if I said I actually owned others my posting would sound legitimate. Sorry about that. But now I am actually panicking. Do I have the measurements correct? Should it be 41.2 x 24.1?
Thanks,

Why don't you just return it or have it assayed. Better yet call LC, like I said I don't think they would have sold you a fake but no harm talking to them.

I just don't know much about these bars to give you anything else.

Took it to a dealer and they weighed it and said it was good. Said there could be differences in dimensions depending on when and who minted it. So, let's just chalk this up to a rookie platinum buyer who ober-reacted because his bar looked different. Thanks for your responses.
