When taking macro pictures of coins, should I take them out of the plastic casing? I always wear white cotton gloves when I handle the more valuable coins but I was wondering if there is any other risk to doing this. Would it degrade the coin slightly if I took it out of the slab for instance?

It's always better to try to photograph coins "raw" rather than in plastic because the photo is usually so much better. Detail and luster typically appears much nicer when coins are not in plastic when photographed.

Raw. You'll find the plastic makes it nearly impossible to get the light right without drastically cutting the brightness of the light and increasing exposure times. Anyways, it's a great excuse to hold your coin in your hand, which is what it's about, for me.

Just as with your eyes, the more items you see through, the more distorted an image may become. Note an exagerated example is looking through water. Light is bent all over the place. As light passes through glass it also becomes slightly distorted and the more glass or plastics the light passes through the more distorted the image becomes. Note glass is basically Silicon Dioxide and that is just one substance that chages light. This does not just pertain to the clarity, but also the color. Even if you use a clear filter or a UV filter on your camera, the light is slightly distorted. Most professional photgraphers do not like to use zoom type lenses because they utilize numerous internal lenses which is not benificial to high quality pnotos. Another example that is difficult to compare is the Iris of your eyes. The variety of color in that part of your eye slightly changes the color spectrum of light passing by and therefore many people do not see the same object as others do.
Summation is if possible take coins out of their plastic encasement for photos.
