I'm afraid you're probably going to be unable to get good coin shots with this camera. Without the macro function, it appears (from the User's Manual) to be unable to focus at a distance of less than 2 feet, and you're going to bee the coin within 12" of the camera to have a chance at a good shot.

Give it a try, though. Maximize your chances by making sure the camera is absolutely steady, including use of the delayed shutter feature so you're not touching the camera when the shutter snaps. Get a lot of light onto the coin for your test, so the camera can use the fastest possible exposure.

Dave,
Another question if a camera has optical zoom does that mean it has a macro setting, or is that something extra on the camera you have to look for ? Best buy has a sony cyber-shot 6 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom for $199.00 is this a good set up sorry for all the questions but I am not a camera guy and not to good with a computer either.

Bruce, the macro setting will be something entirely different from the zoom. The zoom allows you to "seem" closer to the object pictured, but if your camera can only focus at 2 feet, and you zoom in to appear closer than that, it still won't focus.

The Sony you mentioned, which I assume is the DSC-W30, has what seems to be a decent Macro function, with focus down to 2cm.

As a confirmed and biased Canon fan, I would recommend the Canon A540 in that price range, with 4x instead of 3x zoom and slightly greater manual control than the Sony. However, I've heard nothing bad about the Sony and I freely admit my bias.

Here's your two best resources for digicam research:

http://www.dpreview.com/
http://www.steves-digicams.com/

Generally, DP Review is a little more pro-oriented, and Steve's is a little more consumer-oriented, but both are excellent sites. If you see a camera you like, it will be reviewed in-depth at one or both places. The forums attached to both are also excellent resources.
