I've read about several members collecting American Silver Eagles. I love this coin. I really think my first numismatic goal will be to acquire a complete collection of the ASEs.

My question is, is it possible to assemble a complete set/collection of ASE's (1986-2007) in PR-70 or PR-69 grade? I've seen a lot of complete NGC-certified PR-69 sets for sale on the internet but no PR-70s. Being a neophyte I don't know if it is even possible to assemble a complete PR-70 collection. Is it? Also, are these complete PR-69 sets for sale the best way to go, or would it be better to collect individual coins in the desired grade?

Thanks again for the help.

MS69 Eagles will be ALOT cheaper. There is one proof ASE, the 1995W that cost a few thousand dollars, it was a special edition coin available only with purchase of the Gold Eagle in a set. I don't think one needs this coin to have a complete set. The easiest way to do it is to just buy the PCGS box set for 600.00, or however much they cost now. Some folks like myself like the adventure and thrill of eACH individual coin, and I can only afford to collect ASE so that's what I do. lol

but I am with you, in love with ASE, did you get the Anniversary Set?

1996 is also a key date in the series and that Eagle cost about twice as much as the rest...

Thanks for the information. In answer to your question, unfortunately no. Boy am I kicking myself for that one. I've been so busy I didn't find my mailing from the Mint until a few days ago. I got my pre-order in for the gold & silver Jamestown Commemorative Proofs but all the ASE 20th Anniversary sets were gone by that point. Oh well, I might be able to find it somewhere else. I'm going to keep looking.

One more question. Is there any significant difference between the MS69s & the PR69s in terms of appearance or value/appreciation? I'm not too fluent/familiar with the differences in the respective grades except for a vague idea of the relative levels of "quality" (can't think of a better term). I know VF, AU, BU, MS, PR. I really need to learn about these.

Thanks again for the help.

MS - Mint State. Uncirculated coins receive MSxx grades.
PR - Proof coins
