I have had this Domitian AE As for some time and never did anything with it until yesterday. I soaked it for a few hours in olive oil and after removing it, I cleaned a little with a pick. Then re-soaked the coin overnight and throughout today, periodically taking it out and working on removing some of the encrustation. There is still a small amount of encrustation behind the head and on the neck, but I wanted to show the results. The first image is what it looked like yesterday while the second image is what it looks like now.

Nice JW! The slow method is the only way to go. I have been working on another batch of uncleans I received recently and am going v..e..r..y slow. The results are much better than the first go around. I'll be posting some this weekend.

Was it really that bright green? I know how you like patina, but that's something else.
The portrait looks much better after your work!

It was that green and I thought it was an awful looking coin. The portrait looked like skelitor or something out of a horror movie. Then I just decided yesterday to see what I could do with it. I'm very pleased with the product so far. I wish the obverse legend was complete. There are several coins that have Fortuna reverse, but it depends on the COS number on the obverse in order to determine which RIC number applies. But short of taking off the patina (which ain't gonna happen), I don't think anyone can make it out.

Also notice the nose on this Domitian compared to the one posted by JangoFett on another thread. This coin was struck while Domitian was Emperor while the others were struck either when his father Vespasian or his brother Titus were in power. Very interesting. As Doug said, the Romans must have had pretty good plastic surgery.
