My older brothers had coin collections started long before I was around. One of the coolest things that I remember were the proof sets in the black or white plastic holders. Always fascinated me.
I can be nearly 100% sure that these sets are long lost or sold in their late teens or early twenties.
My younger brother and I decided a proof set would be rather cool for our older brother as a present. Lucked upon one at a decent price and just shipped it off to the west coast this afternoon. One of these days, when they are visiting each other, little brother will gift the proof set to our older brother.
The gift of numismatics will reach across a couple thousand miles and several decades.

That's wonderful. I'd die for a '59 Proof Set - it's my birth year. Some day.

What a great gift for your brother. I came across a ungraded cameo proof 1957 Franklin half that I sent to my sister as it was her birth year.

Fantastic idea. I've been giving a Proof and Uncir set to people for from 20 to 30 years now for Christmas Presents. I like those for presents since a toy, clothing, tools, etc. all get used, thrown out eventually. Those sets usually stick around for a long time and good rememberance of those that gave them.

Hey SuperDave, you do realize that the 1959 proof set isn't too expensive?
I've seen them at my local coin show for like $27-$35

Oh, yeah, I get that but it would have to be a "physically-present" purchase rather than something online - this would be one buy I'd have to touch first. My Birth Year Set will need to be as good as I can get, across the board. It's tough for me to reach B&M dealers from where I live. This is one potential goal for next year's World's Fair of Money.

Left - truly unfortunate for them. I will be your brother. I was born in 1936, 1939, 1909, and some other year I will have to look up. :)
