Hello My name is Gregg and I am a rank newbie to this forum and coins in general. I hope all are well here and that this year will be a very good year for all of us. I have been offered a coin, with some more to come but I have no idea what the values are for the Bactrain era coins are worth or how to even tell if they are legitimate. The coin I will show here in in Russia somewhere now and they claim it was a legacy and passed down to the family over the years in Tajikistan. Any help with this coin would be appreciated. I have the same coin and I can tell you to stay away from this one. Style is messed up and it does not look right to me. Sorry to say that but I think this is a modern coin, not a history piece. Coin like this can be pretty expensive, depending on the condition of course.

Welcome here! I've been fascinated with Bactrian coins ever since I saw some in a museum. I feel very unqualified to comment, except that Bactrian coins I've seen are normally well-struck, high-relief, fine details. Like what rusevbg said, the details on the coin above aren't as well-executed as Demetrios coins on Wildwinds. It looks "off" to me too, but you might find an expert on Bactria before you make a decision--good luck! Here are a few of the same ruler/style from Wildwinds:

to the community. I don't know a lot about this coin type, but what I can tell from you pictures is the surface is very course. These coins were struck in silver, in the pictures the coin looks like base metal. Lastly it doesn't have the classic look about it, compare it to the coins that DVCollector posted and you will see what I mean. I also believe the coin is a modern copy.

Lets see if I can answer your question. I am no where never an expert on this series but have seen my share of classical era coins. So what I say if based on my impressions. From the photos the coin doesn't appear to be silver. Can you confirm if it is? The surface on the reverse is very course which could be a sign of being cast. The legends are not as raised as what you would expect to see on a real coin. Lastly and more difficult to explain is that bust doesn't have the classical look the features appear flat and not as well defined as what is expected on this type of coin.

Quote: what is the difference in the coins from Wildwinds and the ones we have? Like Echizento, I'm not at all an expert on these coins either, so I can only offer my observations. To illustrate what I see, I have quickly cobbled together a comparison between your photos, and one that is confirmed authentic from Cornell U. I don't know how important these differences are, but what I see is... Portrait: On the Demetrios coins I pictured from Wildwinds, the portraits look very consistent--the profile has a very distinct style/interpretation. The style is classical Greece, while the coin you pictured is more of a interpretation of the original; it is nowhere near the same quality--as others have noted. Inscriptions: I have not seen another example of this coin type with inscriptions around Demetrios. Demetrios and Bactria are usually inscribed on the reverse. I am not a scholar of Greek, but your coin appears to have different inscriptions from the norm--what do they say? Flan: Bactrian coins I've seen are typically well-struck, centered on circular flans and without much cracking. Why is this coin an exception with a rough strike and large cracks? Again, all I know about these coins is from personal interest and an eye for details--but without actual expertise. I feel the anomalies we've cited add up to a big red flag--avoid this coin, and buy one from a dealer who is an expert on Classical/Bactrian coins. Good luck! Digging a little deeper, I have found a confirmed copy that looks very similar to the OP's coin, discussed here.

hi folks the inscriptions around the coin is what I see as the main difference in the one I have been shown vs the many that are shown so far. I have no clue as to what the coin is made from either as no one seems to want to tell me. so I really dont know what to tell the people. I have told them already that I think it is not original but of course everyone has only real authentic coins of course so let me ask one more question if I may. IF this thing was real what would be a going price for it? I cannot seem to find a place that has the same coin with any price anywhere. thanks for all the info and there is no reason for all of you to bother more with this. the people can take the info you have sent me or not. take care gregg

Regarding the coin you were offered, it closely matches the fake pictured, and the style is all off--big avoid! And, the more I research these coins, the more I find differences/exceptions. Here is a genuine Demetrios coin that is the closest I've seen to the copy above. The real coins are rather expensive. Here is one example that sold in 2003
