What do you think is most interesting about the 1881 S Morgan dollar; History when it was struck, history since it was struck or its physical characteristics?

I won't comment one the history of this years production. But rather that the Obvious results of the Mints Success in all its prior attempts to produce a "SOLID" and clean production of coinage...one MUST remember since its start in 1878 it had so many flaws in which we now "haven to the VAM" Idealology...1881-s was a PRIME year among most years of great strikes and few vams... less than 60 off the top of my head to over 230 for 1878....The simple fact is most people have many great 1881-s that don't seem to command a value....and this is the point....and why....hope this helps...

The 1881-S is the "go-to" coin if you want to see what a truly wonderful Business Strike Morgan looks like. They're among the very least-expensive in high grades, almost always show strikes of staggering quality, and can even be found with genuine Cameo frosting.

If you want an MS66 Morgan, and you budget allows only $300, you can probably do it with this coin.

Those are the exact reasons why I love the 1880-S and 1881-S Morgan dollars!

This one has DMPL fields. 1880-S and 1881-S are perfect for type sets because they are the most hammered coins of the Morgan series and just as SuperDave said, they are cheap in higher grades as well, so its the perfect type coin. This coin is in my dansco type set album
