Is this a 39 rev of 40? Not like its going to be worth a ton, but these coins seem hard to find since they are usually worn enough to not be able to tell what the steps look like... comparing this to ms 67 pictures and a couple 1940 nickels that I have, it seems like a 39 rev 40. any input jefferson guys and gals? thanks

It appears to be a 1940 reverse, which is the more common reverse for 1939, 90% 1939-D 75% and about 45% of the 1939-S nickels have the 1940 reverse.( I think I have that right ) I cannot be absolutely sure but the sides of the steps in your picture make me think so as they are fairly well defined. A little sharper and closer image of just the steps would help for sure.

So I worked with your photo and I see straight steps of 1940 here.

why does pcgs website say that only 12,535 39 with rev of 40 nickels were minted, while you say its the most common?

can you post a link to that please?
I think you are referring to proofs maybe?

Nevermind ... I found it

There were both types in proofs as well with a total of 12,535 proofs minted in 1939 with the reverse of 1940 being the more difficult to find.

Further, to complicate things, there are very rare 1940 proof nickels with the reverse of 1939 ( or 1938 if you like, with the wavy steps ).
