OK I'm back ...

Odd you should post this and I have a mint mark on a 1946 D nickel that looks much like yours and was what I thought might be a 1946D over inverted D but it may just be a re-punched mint mark.

Later I picked up another. Notice that in my real one, that the D is rounded and I have another image here below that which I found someplace to compare mine for the real one.

It looks like MD to me, not an RPM.

nickelguy, the repunching (?) on mine does indeed look like your top photo - although the position of the mintmark appears to differ.

Yes I agree they do look alike, but they look to be in different positions.
