My first denarius!

I think that it is RIC 772 on wildwinds.

Wild winds lists the coin as: Domitian Denarius. 89 AD. IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VIII, laureate head right / IMP XXI COS XIIII CENS P P P, Minerva standing left with thunderbolt, spear & shield at feet.

My coin looks very like the coin pictured. http://wildwinds.com/coins/sear5/s2737.html

The legend on my coin was listed by the dealer as-
obverse: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P XIII
reverse: IMP XXII COS XVI CENS PPP

This is a little different than the RIC legend description on wildwinds. I am not sure if that matters.

What do you you all think. Thanks in advance!

It does matter. Try RIC 763. I think it's a match. And it's a very nice coin. Congrats

I get wistful when I hold a Morgan, wondering what its story was for the last 100 years. Imagine yours! What the heck has it been up to for the last 2000 years?!? What has it seen?

Have you touched it with your bare hand? Fingerprints be damned, I couldn't resist.

Don't worry SilverEye, Ancients are not nearly as delicate as modern coins. Many have been cleaned to a point that a little handling will actually help them restore something like a natural surface so you can hold your coins without guilt. One with many years of toning are somewhat protected naturally. Just avoid putting foreign materials on the coin with dirty hands (IMO that includes wax, salad oils and anything else you think might make the coin more appetizing).

JW, thank you for the accurate attribution! I have no idea how missed it. Its is obvious to me now.

RIC 763. Domitian Denarius. 93-94 AD. IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P XIII, laureate head right / IMP XXII COS XVI CENS P P P, Minerva standing left with thunderbolt and spear, shield on ground to right.

I am curious what the significance of the XIII is compared to XIIII is. What does this number represent

Also, I do not see a mint mark. Is there a way to tell where this coin was minted

Silver Eye, yes I have held the coin! And I wonder...! I am thrilled to have one of the 12 caesars in my collection even if he was the last.

I find Domitian's history very interesting. Obviously overshadowed by his father and brother he still came to power. Although not a military hero like them, he still showed some street smarts escaping Vitellius's clutches. The history of these emperors reads like Hollywood script! Only real.

I really like this coin's mostly clear legend and the limited wear on the bust! I do wish it did not have the obvious cleaning marks. All said, I am extremely happy to have this 1,919 year old piece of history in my care!
