Canadian numismatics just lost a very important person, Ingrid Smith. Many on this site may have never met or even heard of her, but Torex used to be her show, and she was the foremost expert on contemporary Canadian counterfeit coins. You might want to take a minute and read about the impact Ingrid had on Canadian Numismatics, there are some videos and files on the Royal Canadian Numismatic Society website. My condolences to the Smith family.

Sandy Campbell (Proof Positive Coins) made a post earlier today on another web site, that I thought I would share here:

Quote:
News of the passing of Ingrid Smith leaves a tremendous hole in Canadian and World numismatics. Many on this site never met Ingrid as she was most active in the industry in the 70's and 80's. She was a wealth of knowledge on counterfeits and was an authority in that area long after she left the main stream of the hobby. She consulted with many US companies and associations at a time where knowledge was not available with a Google search....She was my inspiration in this area and we had many discussions on suspect coins over the years.

First and foremost she was a great lady...always polite...always had lots to say and always had an open ear...two qualities rarely seen in the same person! When I started in this industry she earned my respect on the same level as Mr. Jim Charlton, Bill Cross and Brian Cornwell....perhaps because she defied the odds as a woman in a man's business...at the same time making her mark.

My sincere condolences to Brian, Christina and her husband Dick.

For those of you wondering why this woman was so important to Canadian Numismatics, here is a link to a brief biography:

http://canadiancoin.com/ingrid/index.html

In 1996, the CBC show 'Venture' featured Ingrid Smith and the Torex Coin Show. The clip is titled "Torex: The World of Coin Dealers". RCNA members can borrow the video from the library: http://www.rcna.ca/videos.php

Or, if the CCF administration permits, a direct video link can be seen here, on a coin website currently being run by her son, Brian Smith:
