My show and tell today is a large (AE35) Provincial from Stratonicea in Caria showing Septimius Severus and Julia Domna face to face. Most of these you see have a small countermark of a boy in a circle. He is usually identified as Caracalla but I don't know on what basis that is made. The reverse shows the goddess Hecate. My example is not very pretty but I bought it as a mate for my other coin which is one of my favorites.

When Caracalla killed his brother Geta, he declared all images of Geta be destroyed. There are even coins where Geta's bust has been erased. My 'favorite' here is the same coin as the above but the countermark has been dug out leaving a jagged hole. Was the c/m Geta or did someone else decide to deface Caracalla? We will never know.

Each of these coins cost me the same but I strongly prefer the one with the hole. Some coins have more character than others!

When I started collecting coins I bought a huge lot, most of the coins were bronze. There were also couple of Geta silver coins with his face damaged. Couple of days later I found about the so called "Damnatio Memoriae"(Condemnation of memory). I still have them, because I thought no matter how they look, they show the pure greed and hatred of Caracalla.

This is just speculation on my part. Of course there is no way of knowing for sure but perhaps the countermark could have also been a denomination mark and was later removed when the market value changed. Although, I perhaps think that the reason for the mark being removed as you had stated is much more likely.

The defacing is very interesting. It sure looks like part of the coin was removed intentionally, rather than a hole made for some other purpose. I wonder if the coin would still circulate with such defacement?
