if a merc is P2 is there any other way besides the mint mark to tell if you have a 16D?
picked up one yesterday and there looks to be a hint of a mint mark but it could just be a S

I wonder if there's any such stuff as Dime-A-Date to help you. The mm is really obscure.

best bet would be to sell it on ebay as a 1916 D hahahahaha
just kidding, but yeah there might be some kind of mintmark there
I did a print screen and tried to zoom in but the pixelation was crazy
On really worn mercs I can usually tell in hand if the top looks like an S or a D
Compare other coins and also see if the placement of the D or S on a 1916 is something that can help you
sorry thats all the help I can give. Good luck!
PS does anyone else like really worn mercs like this?
for some reason I really like the look of coins when the rims are touching and covering up the letters around the coins

I'm thinking S.

The top left of the mintmark seems a bit curved.

I don't think this one is it either, but if you can match to one of the 4 die positions of the 16-D, then maybe you have something there.

well, ANACS would be glad to charge you $30 to tell you what mm it is, but I don't know if they REALLY know or if they just decide it's an S.

I think it's an S. Due to the curvature appearing to continue downward on the left side of what might, could, should be the Mint Mark.
