If you read my past postings about my Hawaii quest a while back, you remember that I "cherry picked" a Hawaiian Dollar that was listed as a quarter for about a fourth of its retail price. Just one problem.... After trips to NGC and ANACS I accepted the fact that it was not genuine although it weighed exactly the right amount (26.68gms) and passed the silver "ring" test. That being said, I did send it back to the seller who refunded my money. Meet try two at completing my Hawaii set... When it arrives, I will liberate it from its plastic prison and mount all five coins in Hawaiian koa wood (which I have). Here's hoping I remember my shop class skills from high school. Oh Nickelsearcher ---- are you out there? http://www.ebay.com/itm/27089126855....m1439.l2649

@jgfindring Great! I had bought two pieces of koa wood that initially had been intended for knife handles that are approx. 2.5" X 6". I had thought about using biscuits and glue to join them and then drill out two holes on one side and three on the other to fit the coins. On the other hand, a regular dark/black mat could be used and a frame made of koa. That way I could have the mat laser engraved with the coins' Hawaiian names. I would love any ideas you may be able to come up with... I certainly wouldn't mind letting you ploy your craft in my behalf! Paleoguy

Those yellow ANACS slabs were pretty easy to crack; it's why they changed the design. You should get into it without trouble. Either way, there ain't nuthin' there that a Dremel can't handle.

I agree with you SD.. They are easy to get into. The tough ones are the ICG slabs... I have a tool that works perfectly every time (so far)... Vice grips!

Ok Paleoguy, a couple of questions on design. First, desk or wall? Able to veiw one side of coins or both sides? Coins as is or in airtites?

I've got some slightly bigger scrap koa around, so don't feel limited by the size of your pieces.

Since there are only five coins, I'm thinking desk mount, able to view both sides, coins either mounted in the koa or in a mat with the wood framing it.. Make sense? At the top of the holder would be "Hawaii Kala pa'a" which means "Hawaiian money" and each coin would be labelled in Hawaiian (Hapahaneli for cent, Kenikeni for dime, etc). I could take care of that either with laser graphics or applique'.
Coins could be either covered in glass or in airtights.

If you do airtites, we can make so both sides of the coins are visible. If you want to go ahead, get 2 airtites for each coin and send me one for each coin (it is liable to get some scratches on it as I fit things, hence the second airtite for final assembly) and I'll see what I can come up with.

Fantastic! I'll hit my local coin shop tomorrow to try and find the airtights.. Since there is so much variance between the dollar (38mm) and the dime (17.9mm) I hope to find some differing outside diameters in the airtights. I really appreciate your thoughts/help. PG

My bad for the late reply PG ... working too many 14 hour days in a stretch to keep up with my valued CCF friends. Excellent news that you gained a refund on the prior fake Hawaiian dollar ... wish I had done so on my fake California. Even better is your lovely, certified example ... beautiful coin indeed. I admire your efforts towards completing a historical set that most of us remain unaware of ... well done indeed. Appears that you have a fellow woodworker willing to help create a holder for your lovely set ... I step aside and encourage the both of you to make the magic happen. David

Thanks NS and Moe for your encouragement! @jgfindring - I have four of the five airtights (all differing diameters). The fifth one (for the cent @ 27mm) I had to buy online since the only ones available locally had wider foam inserts with a larger capsule and I'm wanting each coin to reside in a different sized hole since they are each different in diameter. The fifth airtight should come to me in another day or two. I'll make up a package with the airtights and a few pieces of exotic woods (knife handle size) that you may find uses for. Send me an email via the CCF with your mailing address and we can trade contact info.... Paleoguy
