New Lighting Technique - Coin Community Forum

The lighting is one LED light, and I suspect that several LEDs or a diffuse source would give different results. What do you think--does this lighting show too much? Report this Post to the Staff

brg5658 Pillar of the Community United States 627 Posts	Posted 01/15/2012 8:53 pm I think it looks nice on smooth, chocolatey brown copper. I'm not sure the same technique would work well for all metal compositions and for all size coins. I have had some trouble lately even getting 2 Jansjo lamps to light a silver dollar size coin well, and have had to use 3. Very nice piece. I'm a fan of both the young Victoria bust and of the seated Britannia design! Report this Post to the Staff

What you want is a picture that shows the coin, in all its glory and its shortcomings, in the best "light" possible. I also shot a higher-grade silver coin this way: As for setup, it's very simple: I position the LED (with some added diffusion) over the coin and then eyeball the light balance/centering. Then I bring in the camera and carefully shoot. I do these hand-held with a small Canon point-and-shoot--very low-tech. Edited by DVCollector 01/15/2012 9:37 pm Report this Post to the Staff

Maybe adjust the white balance for the LED to get true color. But maybe this is true color. The detail is excellent. Report this Post to the Staff
