Not sure about this one. Seller has this one as Theo II, but I've looked at all the resources at my disposal but didn't find any campgate coins of Theo II. As a result, I am starting to think this one may be actually Theo I (and Wildwinds has several campgate coins for Theo I). What's your take on this? And are there any Theo II campgates?

According to HELVETICA'S, only Theodosius I had campgate coins. None are listed for Theo II

Quote: Theo I or Theo II? It might not be either of them! - I see something in right field, maybe Zeta, don't think Theo I had anything there. I'll see what I can find out in RIC.

RIC 9 lists nothing in right field for Theo I at Thessalonica, (The only mint he produced campgates at?), it also says he almost always had 'B' or Delta as his workshop. This could be an interesting one to ID - is it just me or could it even be semi-official or unofficial? I'm not even sure if the legend ' GLORIA REI-PVBLICE' fits with whats left of the reverse.

I believe that it's Theodosius I. But with that mustache it could be Kaiser Wilhelm.

Yeah I've tried reading the reverse legend but I got nothing definite. It seems this has turned into a bigger mystery than I thought it would be, interesting...

But I do wonder if it is a semi official or unofficial like you mentioned bobby.

Quote: But with that mustache it could be Kaiser Wilhelm Its certainly an interesting looking coin - the reverse also looks odd to me, the campgate looks narrow and the door offset to one side. I'm not to familiar with campgates though, somehow only ever owned two! If it is Theo I then as far as I can tell its un-recorded, maybe a barb, maybe a mule, maybe a 'Not in RIC'. Will look again tomorrow after having a think.

I've been looking for a while now mate but haven't made any progress unfortunately. Do you have the coin in hand?

Thanks for taking the time to research this one, buddy. I don't happen to own the coin. I was browsing coins of Theo II when I found this one and liked it enough to consider purchasing it (if it really was Theo II), but I wanted to check with you guys first.

Ah - well, at the minute I couldn't say what it is for certain. Its possible its Theo I but could easily be a different Emperor in hand. Whoever it is I like his moustache
