I looked at a raw 1922 no-D cent today with a 10x loupe it looked to me that it may have been a altered coin BUT I thought it may have had -S- at one time do they ever alter a 192 something with a S mint to look like a 22 no D?

All dies were punched with the Denver mint mark. Over polishing removed the mint mark off a few. On the known examples you should see very little detail on the devices. If the devices are full and there is no mint mark, then it may have been altered. There are some dies that not all of the mint mark was removed. You may have one of these "weak D's" There is will be some of the mint mark still showing. Here is an example of the weak D:

Just a small part of the mint mark showing.
Here is an image of the so called "no D".

Note die abrasion most all devices.
Anything is possible to alter a coin, but it wuld be hard to remove the mint mark and not leave a mark or alter the surface of the field. On the Weak D you can see just a very small indication of the mint mark. They might alter a 1923 to try to make it look like a 1922? Then you would need to look closer at the digits to see if this happened. Most of the rime we see the date and look for the missing mint mark.
