Hey there Shonit,

well that will depend if your searching for just silver or numismatics. It would seem like your just going for the silver so ill base my answer on that.
Quarters and dimes are the only source of silver for rolled coins, Nickles do have a couple but are way to hard and scarce to even both roll searching for. As for dimes vs Quarters well let me put it this way.WOW you found a quarter really that's Great. I've searched about 2 boxes worth of quarters and have been skunked not a one. not even close so I gave up on them. as for dimes I am averaging about 1-2 dimes (closer to the 1 :P ) per box. a box of dimes is equal to $250.

hope that helps.

Dimes are about the only thing you typically find in roll hunting. Frankly, there is so little variety in dimes I just wouldn't bother myself, but hey, it's a hobby. Personally dimes push the envelope on my eyesight so bad I just get frustrated and give up. The odd time I'll do a box of nickels in order to get away from the silver, I find that to be more entertaining.

I guess it depends what your collecting goals are.

I'm still new to roll hunting myself so it's just the thrill of possible finding something decent. I too have yet to find a silver in quarters but have got a couple from dimes. I'm with Ugly on hard to see with the dimes and will only do a few rolls at a time before I take a "break".

I like pennies. They are the only ones that produce coins that are old, and I've had the best finds in pennies. Plus at $25.00 a box it's alot cheaper and keeps me busy. However I've never found silver in pennies

An easy tip for dime hunters. DONT LOOK AT THE DATES :P easy way of doing this is just get a magnet. unload all your dimes from the roll spread them out the run a magnet over them all the ones that get picked up are NOT silver or are US and other countries. The US ones all you have to do is check the side of the coin. If you see copper on the side again its NOT silver. I can search about 50 rolls of dimes in under an hour with this method. Usually most of the time you will be able to spot the silver ones right off the hop BUt there are a few cases were a none silver dime looks like its silver and visa versa so this method does save time.

DO NOT DO THIS IF:

- you are looking for numismatics as the magnet can potentially scratch the coin.
- you are trying to fill a set, in which again the magnet may scratch and you will have to check the dates anyway.

I thought about the mangnet thing as well but then I wouldn't have as much fun searching. But on the otherside of this point as well, I also look for a few of the varieties like 1980 type "0" and 1969 large date and the 1999p & 2000p Might as well look if I have them, but silver is what I'm looking for. I started the roll hunt 9 says ago and am averaging 1 silver dime for every 22 rolls. Got myself 7 so far and also found a 1970 which is somewhat low mintage. I've gone through quite a few quarter rolls and been skunked as well. I like the dimes because you can find a lot of old ones that keep you on the edge of your seat and you have the best chance of finding some silver because so many people dont have the eyes for dime searching or they dont want to sort through something that's so small. CHEERS!
